Amya Brice (She/They) is the Founder and Creative Director of Grassroots Dance Exploration. She is 21 years old and a recent Nazareth College graduate with a degree in Dance studies and Anthropology. While in college she has performed in works by Heather Roffe, Hettie Barnill, Mariko Yamada, Michelle Pritchard, and Caitlin Mahon. She has also participated in works from guest artists’ such as Roni Koresh, Doug Varone, and Cameron McKinney. She has worked on many modern dance projects and performances such as The Common Place Dance Project, choreographed by Ethan Beckwith-Cohen, Neyda Colon-DiMaria, and Janalyce Lane; as well as being a member of the multimedia and performing arts platform Create a Space Now, created by Hettie Barnhill and Robert Gertler where we have created and performed the piece A Love Letter to Brian, Lesley, and Michelle which has now been turned into a film. Brice has recently performed in Wild Gestures Dance created by Zoe Walders, and In Process of Being created by Zach Frazee during the Rochester Fringe Festival 2021. Amya Brice is looking to expand her company as well as bring inclusivity and diversity into the local dance community.
I strive for inclusion. As a choreographer and as a dancer, I work to bring diversity to the stage. From my perspective, when the greater population discusses dance only one kind of person is imagined. My politicized body can change that. Being a black woman, I will always be seen as political. I am seen as the history of my race and my gender.
How can we use our lived experiences to broaden the idea of diversity and inclusion? As a choreographer of modern dance, I use the bodily experiences of myself as well as my dancers to create a diverse story through movement. Each person goes through life differently; whether it is how we talk to one another, or how we walk through a crowded room. Your story will be completely different to the person next to you. These mundane movements can show a lot about a person and can infer how someone has lived. I want to use this idea along with the politicized body of a woman, or a person of color, or someone in the LGBTQ+ community to deepen the idea of diversity and inclusion in concert dance.
